EDITORS COMMENTS
The End of the Afghan War: A Historic Moment Captured on The Graphic's Cover on 12th July 1879 The Afghan War, also known as the Second Anglo-Afghan War, came to an end on July 12, 1879, with the signing of the Treaty of Gandamak between the British and Afghan leaders. The cover of The Graphic, a popular British illustrated weekly newspaper, captured this significant moment in history with a striking photograph of Emir Mohammad Yaqub Khan (Ameer Yakoob Khan) at Gandamak. The top illustration on the cover shows the photographer, John Burke, posing the Emir for the photograph. Burke, a renowned British photographer, had been sent to document the signing of the treaty. The Emir, dressed in traditional Afghan attire, appears anxious and curious as he looks at the camera, perhaps wondering how he would be portrayed in the resulting image. The bottom illustration depicts the photographic process in progress. Burke is seen fixing the negative in a darkroom, carefully developing the image. The intricate details of the process, from the chemicals and equipment to the focused concentration of the photographer, underscore the technological innovation and skill required to capture an image in the 1870s. This cover of The Graphic offers a unique glimpse into the end of the Afghan War, providing a visual record of a pivotal moment in Anglo-Afghan relations. The photograph of Emir Mohammad Yaqub Khan, taken at Gandamak, remains a powerful reminder of the historical significance of this period in Afghan and British history.
