EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Greater Argonaut and Winged Argonaut Octopus" or "Polpo navigatore degli Antichi," is a captivating illustration from the "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Stanghi, with the publication overseen by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840). The image showcases two intriguing marine creatures: the Greater Argonaut Octopus (Argonauta argo) and the Winged Argonaut (Argonauta hians). The Greater Argonaut, also known as the "beaked octopus," is depicted with a long, curved beak and eight arms, each adorned with two rows of suckers. The creature's body is elongated and graceful, with a prominent mantle and a pair of large eyes. The Winged Argonaut, on the other hand, is shown in its egg-like casing, known as an "ink-filled purse," which is attached to a float. This unique creature is also known as the "Angelic Octopus" or "Venus's Oyster," due to its delicate appearance and the mythological association of the Argonauts with the goddess Venus. Turpin, considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, brought these marine wonders to life through his meticulous and detailed illustrations. The hand-coloring adds an extra layer of beauty and vibrancy to the engraving, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
