EDITORS COMMENTS
King Edward III of England, victorious after the Siege of Calais in 1347, is depicted in this handcoloured steel engraving along with his queen, Philippa of Hainault. The image, created by John Leech from Gilbert Abbott A Becketts Comic History of England, published by Bradbury, Agnew & Co. in London in 1880, captures a poignant moment as Queen Philippa intercedes on behalf of the Six Burghers of Calais, who are seen kneeling before the king with ropes around their necks. The burghers had surrendered to Edward III following a long and brutal siege, and were now facing the possibility of execution. Edward III wears a magnificent crown, adorned with precious gems and intricate designs, atop his head. He is dressed in a richly embroidered robe, with a fur-lined mantle draped over his shoulders. His right hand holds a scepter, while his left hand rests on the hilt of his sword. The king's regal bearing and stern expression convey his authority and power. Philippa of Hainault, dressed in a flowing gown and veil, sits on a stool beside her husband. She reaches out to touch the shoulder of one of the burghers, offering words of comfort and compassion. The burghers, dressed in simple clothing and with expressions of fear and resignation, look up at the queen and king with hope in their eyes. The scene is further enlivened by the presence of bishops and heralds, who stand to the side, observing the proceedings with interest. The use of handcolour and intricate detail in the engraving adds to the overall visual impact of the image, making it a fascinating glimpse into the past.
