This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Moon Jellyfish, Aurelia labiata, from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is renowned for his exceptional talent and meticulous attention to detail. The Moon Jellyfish, also known as Aurelia labiata or Aurelia crenulata, is a common jellyfish found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. Its translucent, bell-shaped body is adorned with undulating, wavy lines and fringed with long, trailing tentacles. The jellyfish's appearance is ethereal and otherworldly, with its delicate, glowing, moon-like appearance earning it its name. The intricate process of creating this engraving involved the transfer of a drawing onto a copper plate, which was then covered in a fine powder and carefully tapped with a stylus to create tiny dots, or stipples, of ink. The plate was then washed with water, revealing the image in reverse, which was then hand-colored.
