The illustration was engraved by Corsi, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is renowned for his exceptional talent and meticulous attention to detail. The Moon Jellyfish, also known as Aurelia labiata or Aurelia crenulata, is a common jellyfish found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. Its translucent, bell-shaped body is adorned with undulating, wavy lines and fringed with long, trailing tentacles. The jellyfish's appearance is ethereal and otherworldly, with its delicate, glowing, moon-like appearance earning it its name. The intricate process of creating this engraving involved the transfer of a drawing onto a copper plate, which was then covered in a fine powder and carefully tapped with a stylus to create tiny dots, or stipples, of ink.
