Established in the late 19th century, the Marquis Cornwallis was once a beloved local watering hole, known for its rich history and welcoming atmosphere. The name of the pub is believed to have been derived from the Marquis Cornwallis, a British Army officer who played a significant role in the late 18th century, most notably in the American Revolutionary War. The red brick exterior of the pub, adorned with ornate detailing and intricate carvings, stands out against the modern backdrop of Shoreditch's ever-evolving urban landscape.
