EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, taken from the collection of Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti, published in Milan between 1815 and 1817, offers a fascinating glimpse into the material culture of the Chukchi people, indigenous inhabitants of the Bering Straits region. The Chukchi are known for their remarkable adaptability to the harsh Arctic climate and their skilled hunting practices. In this photograph, various artifacts are displayed, each revealing the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Chukchi people. At the center, a pick-axe made from a walrus tusk stands out, its curved shape and intricate carvings showcasing the artistry of its creators. Nearby, a stone hatchet from Alaska, with its sharp edges and robust design, attests to the effectiveness of their tools for survival. A wooden instrument with claws is also depicted, used by the Chukchi people for hunting walrus. The claws were attached to the end of a long pole, allowing the hunter to grab and hold onto the walrus as they breached the surface of the water. The photograph also includes a tomb of the Unalaskans, an ancient burial site that speaks to the rich history and traditions of the region. In the foreground, a baidar, a traditional Chukchi boat, is shown, along with a dress and bow. These items underscore the importance of the sea and hunting in Chukchi life, as well as their connection to both continents. This photograph, taken from Joseph Billings and Martin Sauers' An Account of an Expedition to the Northern Parts of Russia, offers a captivating window into the past, allowing us to appreciate the resilience and resourcefulness of the Chukchi people and their unique connection to the land and sea.
