EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the determination and courage of two pioneering women's rights advocates, Victoria Woodhull and her sister Jennie Claflin, as they attempt to exercise their right to vote in the New York election of 1871. At a time when women's suffrage was still a contentious issue and the right to vote was denied to them, Woodhull and Claflin, both noted American feminists, boldly made their way to the polling station with the intention of casting their ballots. Despite their unwavering commitment to women's political enfranchisement and their active involvement in the women's suffrage movement, they were unfortunately turned away from the polling station. This rejection did not deter them, however, as they continued to campaign tirelessly for women's rights and equality in politics. The 1870s were a pivotal time in the women's suffrage movement in America, with many women's rights activists, including Woodhull and Claflin, pushing for the expansion of the franchise to include women. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their courage and perseverance in the face of adversity, and their significant contributions to the fight for women's political representation in the United States.
