EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the defiant spirit of the Egyptian populace as they rise up against the French invaders on the streets of Cairo on 22 October 1798. The French army, led by General Napoleon Bonaparte, had landed in Egypt just a few months earlier with the goal of expanding the French Empire and securing control over the lucrative spice and textile trade routes. However, the local population, who had long been ruled by the Ottoman Turks, saw the French invasion as a threat to their way of life and their religious and cultural traditions. In this scene, Egyptian men, women, and children are shown charging at the French soldiers with makeshift weapons, including sticks, knives, and scythes. The determination and resolve in their faces are palpable as they fight to defend their city and their freedom. The clash between the two sides would be a brutal and protracted one, with the French ultimately emerging victorious after several weeks of intense fighting. Despite their defeat, the Egyptian resistance would continue to simmer, fueled by a deep-seated resentment towards the French occupation. The campaign in Egypt would prove to be a turning point in Napoleon's military career, as the experience of fighting in a foreign land against an indigenous population would shape his future strategies and tactics. The legacy of the Egyptian campaign would also have far-reaching consequences for the region, as it marked the beginning of a long period of European colonialism in Africa.
