February 1956: transported by C-124 to the USAF Museum, Dayton, OH.. July 1971: to new museum facility at Wright Field Jul 1971. Date: circa 1958

This photograph captures the United States Air Force (USAF) Bell P-59B Airacomet 44-22650 (msn 27-58) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on October 30, 1944, just after it was taken into strength by the USAF. The Airacomet was the first jet-powered fighter produced in the United States, delivered prior to the contract cancellation. In 1947, the aircraft was transferred to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio, for tests. Afterward, it was moved to Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico for further testing on September 18, 1947. The Airacomet was returned to the USAF later that year. In 1950, it was struck off charge at Kirtland Air Force Base and displayed in front of the base headquarters. In 1955, the New Mexico Air National Guard acquired the Airacomet as a ground instructional aircraft. In February 1956, it was transported to the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio, by a C-124. The Airacomet remained at the museum until it was moved to the new facility at Wright Field in July 1971. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of flight and aviation in the United States, showcasing the pioneering role of the Bell P-59B Airacomet in the development of jet-powered aircraft.
