EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite marble sarcophagus, dating back to the 3rd century AD, was discovered at Tel Turmus in Israel, a site known for its rich archaeological finds from the Roman period. The sarcophagus is adorned with intricate relief carvings depicting various mythological scenes, with Dionysus, the ancient Greek god of wine, fertility, and revelry, taking center stage. Dionysus is shown here in his regal attire, seated on a throne, surrounded by symbols of his divine power such as grapes, ivy, and panthers. The god is flanked by two satyrs, half-human, half-animal beings who were his loyal companions and attendants in mythology. The scene below the throne represents the god's triumphant procession, with a chariot pulled by leopards and accompanied by various deities and mythological figures. The sarcophagus is now housed in the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum in Jerusalem, providing a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the ancient Near East during the Roman Empire. The intricate carvings and the well-preserved marble attest to the advanced artistic skills of the Roman craftsmen of the time, making this sarcophagus an invaluable addition to the museum's collection and a testament to the enduring allure of ancient mythology.
