EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork depicts both a young and adult South Island Saddleback Tieke, or Philesturnus carunculatus, from Sir Walter Lawry Buller's seminal work "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" published in 1888. The illustration was expertly crafted by the renowned Dutch natural history artist, JG Keulemans. The South Island Saddleback Tieke is an endemic bird species to New Zealand, native to the South Island and some parts of the Stewart Island. They are characterized by their distinctive saddle-like feathered crest on their back, which gives them their common name. The young bird in this illustration is shown with a speckled brown plumage, while the adult bird displays the more familiar black, white, and orange coloration. The South Island Saddleback Tieke was once widespread throughout the South Island, but due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species, their population declined significantly. Conservation efforts have been underway since the late 20th century, and their numbers have been steadily increasing. Today, they can be found in various protected areas, including predator-free islands and fenced enclosures. This beautiful watercolor artwork not only showcases the unique beauty of the South Island Saddleback Tieke but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endemic species and preserve New Zealand's rich biodiversity.
