EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in international relations as German Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife, Augusta Viktoria, pay a visit to the Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid II in Istanbul (then known as Constantinople) in the late 19th century. The German Imperial couple arrived by steam liner and were greeted with grand ceremonies fit for their majesties. The Sultan, who ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1876 until his deposition in 1909, is seen here overseeing the proceedings from the shore, while the German royals are rowed ashore on a yacht. Abdul Hamid II, the last Ottoman Sultan to rule with absolute power, presided over a period of decline in the power and extent of the Ottoman Empire. His reign was marked by political instability, economic hardships, and increasing European influence. Despite these challenges, the Sultan maintained an air of imperial majesty, as evidenced by the grand welcome afforded to the German visitors. The Bosphorus, the waterway that separates Europe and Asia, serves as the backdrop to this significant encounter between two powerful monarchies. The photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of diplomacy and power dynamics between Germany and the Ottoman Empire during a pivotal time in world history.
