This photograph captures a historic moment in international relations as German Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife, Augusta Viktoria, pay a visit to the Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid II in Istanbul (then known as Constantinople) in the late 19th century. The German Imperial couple arrived by steam liner and were greeted with grand ceremonies fit for their majesties. The Sultan, who ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1876 until his deposition in 1909, is seen here overseeing the proceedings from the shore, while the German royals are rowed ashore on a yacht.
