This striking 18th century portrait captures the distinguished visage of Vicomte Charles Grant, Maréchal des Camps et Armees de Sa Majesté Très Chrétienne (Marshal of the Camps and Armies of His Most Christian Majesty), Vicomte de Vaux. The Vicomte, born in 1683, rose through the ranks of the French military to become a trusted advisor and commander under the reign of King Louis XIV. His military career began in 1701, when he joined the army at the age of 18 to fight in the War of the Spanish Succession. Over the next several decades, he proved himself to be a capable and brave soldier, participating in numerous battles and campaigns. In 1720, he was appointed as a Marshal of the Camps and Armies, a prestigious title that placed him among the highest-ranking military officers in the realm. The Vicomte's military prowess and loyalty to the crown earned him the favor of King Louis XV, who granted him the title of Vicomte de Vaux in 1724. He continued to serve the monarchy faithfully, playing a key role in the War of the Polish Succession and the War of the Austrian Succession.
