EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 15th century miniature depicts a pivotal moment from Virgil's epic poem, The Aeneid. Here, we see Aeneas, the legendary hero of Roman mythology, in the city of Carthage, where he has arrived after being shipwrecked. The queen of Carthage, Dido, is shown welcoming him with open arms, unaware that her heart will soon be broken when Aeneas is called away by the gods to fulfill his destiny and found the Roman Empire. Virgil (70-19 BC) was a renowned poet of ancient Rome, and The Aeneid is his most famous work. Composed during the Augustan period, it is an epic poem that recounts the journey of Aeneas from Troy to Italy, and is considered one of the greatest works of world literature. This miniature, found on folio 80r of a 15th century manuscript, is a testament to the enduring influence of Virgil's poetry. It is now housed in the History Library of the University of Valencia in Spain, where it continues to captivate scholars and admirers of ancient Roman literature and art. The intricate details of this miniature, with its rich colors and delicate brushstrokes, transport us back to the world of ancient Rome and the mythic tales that continue to shape our cultural heritage.
