East Coast Joys, No 6, LNER poster, 1931

Poster produced for London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the East Coast of England. The posters formed a continuous scene when placed next to each other, but each was designed so that it could also stand alone. Artwork by Tom Purvis (1888-1957), who rallied for the professionalisation of commercial art. In 1930 he was one of the group of artists who founded the Society of Industrial Artists, which campaigned for improved standards of training for commercial artists in order to broaden their scope of employment

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the sixth and final poster in a series commissioned by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1931. The poster, titled "Sea Sports" was designed to promote rail travel to the picturesque East Coast of England. Renowned artist Tom Purvis skillfully captured the essence of this coastal destination, highlighting the various pastimes that could be enjoyed by visitors. Purvis's artistic prowess is evident in his ability to create a continuous scene when all six posters are placed together, while ensuring each individual artwork can stand alone as well. This innovative approach demonstrates Purvis's dedication to pushing boundaries within commercial art. Notably, Purvis played an instrumental role in advocating for improved standards of training for commercial artists. In 1930, he co-founded the Society of Industrial Artists, which aimed to professionalize this field and broaden its employment opportunities. The image itself transports viewers into a world where sea motorboats gracefully glide across sparkling waters under clear blue skies. It evokes feelings of joy and excitement associated with boating and yachting along the East Coast. Preserved by NRM/Pictorial Collection at National Railway Museum, this print serves as a testament to both Purvis's exceptional talent and LNER's commitment to promoting travel experiences through visually stunning railway posters.
