Logan Rock, Treryn Dinas, near Treen, St Levan, Cornwall. 1894

Hand coloured slide from Tour through Cornwall No.39 showing a close up with the Logan Rock, or rocking stone, at the top. Perched 30 metres above the sea, the naturally occurring piece of granite attracted tourists due to its ability to rock back and forth on the cliff top with the slightest touch. It was dislodged by a group of sailors in 1824 who were then forced to reposition it at their own expense. The headland of Treryn Dinas is also the site of an Iron Age promontory fort. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1894 showcases the awe-inspiring Logan Rock, perched majestically atop Treryn Dinas in Cornwall. Hand-coloured to bring out its natural beauty, this slide captures a close-up of the famous rocking stone that has fascinated visitors for centuries. Standing an impressive 30 meters above the sea, the Logan Rock is a remarkable piece of granite that effortlessly sways back and forth with even the gentlest touch. Its unique ability to balance on the cliff top made it a popular attraction for tourists seeking both adventure and marvel. However, this iconic landmark holds more than just geological significance. In 1824, a group of sailors foolishly dislodged the rock during their reckless escapades. Realizing their mistake and facing public outrage, they were compelled to rectify their actions at their own expense by repositioning it carefully. Treryn Dinas itself boasts historical importance as an Iron Age promontory fort. This headland serves as a testament to ancient civilizations that once thrived in these lands. Though we cannot credit any specific photographer for capturing this extraordinary moment frozen in time, we are grateful to have such visual treasures preserved within our collection at Royal Cornwall Museum
