False-col SEM of yeast cells
Yeast. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of yeast cells, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, commonly known as Bakers or Brewers yeast, growing on potato dextrose agar. Yeast is able to ferment sugar, producing alcohol & carbon dioxide in the process. It has long been used in the brewing of beer, the production of wine and in baking of leavened bread (carbon dioxide causes the dough to rise). Medically, dried yeast is used as a source of vitamin B1, riboflavin & nicotinic acid. Yeast divide rapidly by budding off new cells (visible here). They may also reproduce sexually. Magnification: X 430 at 35mm size. Coloured orange. Original is BW print B250/171

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-color scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of yeast cells, specifically Saccharomyces cerevisiae, commonly known as Bakers or Brewers yeast. The vibrant orange hue adds an artistic touch to the intricate details of these tiny organisms. Growing on potato dextrose agar, the yeast cells are depicted in their natural habitat. Yeast is a versatile microorganism with numerous applications. It has played a vital role in brewing beer, producing wine, and leavening bread for centuries. Through fermentation, yeast converts sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide, contributing to the unique flavors and textures found in these products. Beyond its culinary significance, dried yeast serves as a valuable source of essential nutrients such as vitamin B1, riboflavin, and nicotinic acid in medical contexts. This microscopic marvel demonstrates its remarkable ability to rapidly divide by budding off new cells—a process clearly visible within this image. While primarily reproducing through budding, yeast can also engage in sexual reproduction when conditions permit. At a magnification of X 430 at 35mm size, this SEM provides an up-close look at the fascinating world of fungi. This mesmerizing photograph captures both the scientific beauty and practical importance of yeasts within our daily lives—an excellent addition to any collection exploring nature's wonders or mycology enthusiasts seeking insights into fungal biology.
