EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Jebel Uweinat mountains, located on the Egyptian-Sudanese-Libyan border. With its peak elevation reaching 1934 meters, this mountain range is a sight to behold. The image reveals the rugged and dry terrain of the Sahara desert, with sandy peaks and rocky formations dominating the landscape. The significance of this area goes beyond its stunning geological features. Prehistoric petroglyphs engraved in sandstone tell a story of a time when this region was wetter and more vegetated. Images depicting giraffes, lions, ostriches, gazelles, and even humans provide glimpses into an ancient past. The satellite image also highlights interesting contrasts within the Jebel Uweinat mountains. The western side consists of intrusive granite arranged in a ring shape while wells, bushes, and grass can be found on its slopes. On the other hand, the eastern areas are characterized by vast sandstone plateaus. Measuring 40 kilometers across in this snapshot taken on March 17th, 2012 by NASA's Terra satellite using ASTER instrument data; it offers us a unique perspective from space. This North African massif stands as a testament to Earth's ever-changing landscapes and serves as an important site for earth science research.
