Light echoes around star V838 Monocerotis
Light echoes around star V838 Monocerotis, Hubble Space Telescope image. This star underwent a massive brightening, or nova, in 2002. Since then, the light released by this event has illuminated a series of shells of gas and dust that surrounded the star. The shells are thought to have been formed by ejections from the star in its past. The 2002 nova is unusual in that the stars outer layers were not ejected in the event, it merely grew enormously in size. Studying the shells may increase understanding of the stars behaviour. This star is 20, 000 light years from Earth, in the constellation Monoceros. This image was obtained on 9 September 2006, with Hubbles Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing light echoes around star V838 Monocerotis, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2006. In 2002, this star experienced a remarkable event known as a nova, resulting in an intense brightening. The aftermath of this celestial spectacle revealed a series of intricate shells composed of gas and dust that once surrounded the star. These shells are believed to have formed from previous ejections by the star itself. What makes the 2002 nova particularly intriguing is that unlike typical novae, where outer layers are expelled, V838 Monocerotis simply expanded enormously in size. By studying these luminous shells, scientists hope to gain deeper insights into the behavior and evolution of stars like V838 Monocerotis. Located approximately 20,000 light years away from Earth within the constellation Monoceros, this distant stellar phenomenon offers us a glimpse into our vast universe's wonders. The image was obtained on September 9th, 2006 using Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument. As we ponder upon this awe-inspiring snapshot taken by Science Photo Library and its implications for astrophysics and our understanding of stars' lives, let us marvel at the beauty and complexity hidden within our Milky Way galaxy – reminding us how small yet connected we are to these cosmic wonders.
