1689 Sir Isaac Newton portrait young
Sir Isaac Newton ( 4 January 1643 -31 March 1727). English physicist and mathematician. 18th Century Mezzotint portrait after the painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller 1689, with later colouring. It shows Newton in his prime and is the earliest of the portraits. Newton is famous for his laws of motion and gravitation and remains one of the greatest scientists of all time. His opus magnus was his " Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica". Other pursuits included optical physics, alchemy, religious and occult investigation, and preventing forgery while superintendant of the Royal Mint. He was widely viewed as an eccentric genius, but his human remains indicated mercury poisoning from his alchemy may have contributed to his instability. This version retains yellow age toning of original and is in the possession of the photographer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a young Sir Isaac Newton, the renowned English physicist and mathematician who lived from 1643 to 1727. The portrait, created in 1689 by Sir Godfrey Kneller and later enhanced with vibrant colors, captures Newton during his prime years. As one of the greatest scientists of all time, he is best known for his groundbreaking laws of motion and gravitation. His magnum opus, "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" solidified his scientific legacy. Beyond physics and mathematics, Newton's interests spanned various disciplines. He delved into optical physics, alchemy, religious studies, occult investigations, and even served as the superintendent of the Royal Mint to combat forgery. Regarded as an eccentric genius during his lifetime, recent analysis of his remains suggests that mercury poisoning resulting from his alchemical experiments may have contributed to moments of instability. The mezzotint portrait featured here retains its original yellow age toning and is currently held by photographer Paul D. Stewart. It offers a glimpse into the enigmatic persona behind Newton's extraordinary achievements. From inventing reflecting telescopes to formulating calculus through binomial theorem applications – this artwork encapsulates the multifaceted brilliance that defined Sir Isaac Newton's life and contributions to science.
