Top of the tower of the McMath Solar Telescope
McMath-Pierce telescope. Top of the tower of the McMath-Pierce solar telescope at the Kitt Peak observatory in Arizona, USA. This is the worlds largest solar telescope. It has a 2.1-metre Sun- tracking mirror (heliostat, upper centre) at the top of a 30-metre tower. The mirror reflects sunlight down a 152-metre long diagonal optical tunnel. Deep underground is a 1.5 metre focus mirror; this reflects the light half way back up the tunnel to a further mirror which directs the light down into an underground observing room. The vertical bars seen here are a wind shield

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring top of the tower of the McMath Solar Telescope, located at the renowned Kitt Peak observatory in Arizona, USA. As the largest solar telescope in the world, this scientific marvel boasts a remarkable 2.1-metre Sun-tracking mirror known as a heliostat, positioned at its upper center. Standing tall at an impressive height of 30 meters, this towering structure serves as a gateway to unraveling the mysteries of our closest star. The heliostat mirror skillfully reflects sunlight down a lengthy 152-meter diagonal optical tunnel that stretches into the depths below ground level. Hidden deep underground lies another crucial component - a 1.5-meter focus mirror. This reflective surface redirects light halfway back up through the tunnel towards yet another mirror before ultimately guiding it into an underground observing room where groundbreaking research takes place. Intriguingly, visible within this striking image are vertical bars acting as wind shields to protect and stabilize this cutting-edge instrument against nature's forces. The McMath Solar Telescope epitomizes mankind's relentless pursuit of understanding our universe and harnesses advanced technology to unlock secrets hidden within our very own sun. With its profound contributions to astronomy and astrophysics, it stands as an emblematic symbol of human curiosity and scientific progress in unraveling celestial wonders above us.
