Winifred Holt and blind soldiers C016 / 4572

Winifred Holt (1870-1945), US sculptor and welfare worker, teaching blind French officers checkers (draughts). Holts work with the blind started in around 1901, and she went on to found or co-found the Ticket Bureau for the Blind (1903) and The New York Association for the Blind (1905). She also worked with the blind in other countries, and in 1921 was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Here, she is working with blind French officers, possibly during or after World War I. The medals displayed by the officer at right are the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USAs earliest news picture libraries

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the remarkable Winifred Holt (1870-1945), an esteemed US sculptor and welfare worker, engaging in a heartwarming act of compassion. With her unwavering dedication to improving the lives of the blind, Holt can be seen teaching a group of blind French officers how to play checkers (draughts). Holt's profound work with the visually impaired began around 1901 when she embarked on a journey that would lead her to found or co-found significant organizations such as the Ticket Bureau for the Blind (1903) and The New York Association for the Blind (1905). Her tireless efforts extended beyond national borders as she worked with blind individuals in various countries. This particular photograph captures Holt during or after World War I, collaborating with these brave French soldiers who had lost their sight due to war-related injuries. Notably displayed by one officer are his distinguished medals—the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre—a testament to his bravery and sacrifice. The image emanates historical significance as it transports us back to early 20th-century Europe amidst one of humanity's most devastating conflicts. Through her compassionate teachings, Holt not only provided entertainment but also offered solace and hope amid adversity. Preserved by the Bain News Service—one of America's earliest news picture libraries—this monochrome snapshot serves as a poignant reminder of both human resilience and our collective responsibility towards those affected by disability.
