EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported into the enchanting world of Shakespeare's "The Tempest". The scene depicted is Act III, Scene 3, where a feast suddenly vanishes before our eyes. Illustrated by Norman Mills Price in 1905 for Charles and Mary Lamb's "Tales from Shakespeare" this colour lithograph beautifully captures the essence of the story. As we gaze upon the image, we witness a group of characters gathered around a banquet table. Their faces reveal a mixture of fear and astonishment as they watch their meal disappear into thin air. In the center of it all stands Prospero's brother Antonio, his expression filled with both awe and anguish. Hovering above them is an ethereal winged spirit known as Ariel. With his magical powers at play, he has conjured up this trick to further manipulate those trapped on the island. The harpy-like creature adds an element of mystery and intrigue to the scene. The cave setting enhances the sense of confinement and isolation experienced by these characters. It symbolizes their entrapment within Prospero's spellbound realm. Each person present appears both enchanted by Ariel's illusions yet also frightened by what lies ahead. This illustration serves as a visual reminder that even in moments of feasting and celebration, there can be underlying anxieties lurking beneath the surface. It encapsulates Shakespearean themes such as illusion versus reality, power struggles among individuals, and ultimately showcases how magic can evoke both wonderment and fear simultaneously.
