The colossus, which measured an impressive 100 feet in height, was erected as a symbol of the city's prosperity and dedication to the sun god, Helios. The statue, also known as the Sun God of Rhodes, was a marvel of ancient engineering and artistry, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Tragically, the colossus did not withstand the test of time. An earthquake struck Rhodes in 224 BC, causing the statue to fall from its pedestals and crashing into the harbor.
