EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print depicts the magnificent Apollo Colossus of Rhodes, a bronze statue of the god Apollo, standing proudly at the entrance of the ancient Greek city's harbor around 280 BC. The colossus, which measured an impressive 100 feet in height, was erected as a symbol of the city's prosperity and dedication to the sun god, Helios. The statue, also known as the Sun God of Rhodes, was a marvel of ancient engineering and artistry, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The colossus was depicted with a bow and arrow in one hand, and a shield in the other, symbolizing Apollo's role as both a god of prophecy and a god of war. Tragically, the colossus did not withstand the test of time. An earthquake struck Rhodes in 224 BC, causing the statue to fall from its pedestals and crashing into the harbor. Despite the devastating loss, the people of Rhodes continued to rebuild and restore their city, preserving the rich history and cultural heritage that the colossus represented. This evocative print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and majesty of ancient Rhodes and the awe-inspiring Apollo Colossus. The intricate details of the statue and the surrounding buildings and landscape transport us back in time, allowing us to imagine the bustling harbor and the people who once called this ancient city home.
