Amidst the chaos and intensity of the Advance on Logeast Wood during the final stages of the First World War in 1918, the spirit of camaraderie and competition among British troops shone through. In the aftermath of a successful attack on the German lines, soldiers from various battalions raced towards a captured enemy gun, each vying for the honor of making their mark upon it. The gun, now a symbol of victory, would bear witness to the bravery and determination of the winning battalion. The date, 1918, etched into history the significance of this event, as the war was drawing to a close. The battlefield of Logeast Wood, dotted with the remnants of war, became a stage for this impromptu competition, with the victorious battalion's name to be etched in chalk upon the gun's barrel.
