EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of triumph and courage as Portuguese aviators Gabo Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral take off from Lisbon's Tagus Estuary in their Fairey IIIB Float plane, embarking on the first transatlantic flight from Europe to Brazil in 1922. The daring duo, who are linked to the legendary Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral, had set out to retrace the historic maritime journey made by their forebear 300 years prior, when Cabral discovered Brazil in 1500. The image shows the pioneering aviators waving from the open cockpit of their seaplane, as they prepare for the arduous 3,500-mile (5,633 km) journey across the Atlantic Ocean. The towering Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Lisbon's rich maritime history, stands in the background, adding to the significance of this groundbreaking moment in aviation history. Gabo Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral's achievement marked a new era in exploration and solidified their place as national heroes and pioneers in the annals of Portuguese aviation.
