EDITORS COMMENTS

The Follies were known for their witty and satirical revues that toured the country, poking fun at contemporary drama, opera, and even Shakespearean productions. Their unique blend of music, musical comedy, and variety entertainment drew large crowds and critical acclaim. The Apollo Theatre in London served as the troupe's permanent home from 1908 to 1912. H.G. Pelissier, the charismatic lead performer, donned the traditional pierrot costume, complete with whiteface makeup, red nose, and baggy clothes. The other members of the company, dressed similarly, accompanied him, creating an enchanting and whimsical atmosphere. The Follies' sketches were not only entertaining but also thought-provoking, offering a fresh perspective on the theatrical world of the time. Their performances were a breath of fresh air in the often serious and traditional theatre scene. This photograph is a testament to the enduring appeal of The Follies and their significant contribution to the world of popular entertainment during the early 20th century.
