EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured aquatint engraving captures the grandeur and opulence of the Carriage of the Duchess of Kent during Queen Victoria's coronation parade in 1838. The Duchess, who was the mother of the young Queen, is depicted in her magnificent robes, adorned with intricate embroidery and rich fabrics. She is accompanied by her Mistress of the Robes, Harriet Sutherland, and Master of the Horse, William Charles Keppel, the Earl of Albemarle. The carriage itself is drawn by six fine horses, with their grooms in attendance. The Duke of Kent, the Duchess's husband and the Queen's father, had died just a few months prior to Victoria's coronation, so the Duchess represented the royal family in this important procession. The carriage, with its ornate design and vibrant colours, is a testament to the pomp and ceremony of the aristocracy during this period. The engraving, published by Fores in London, provides a correct representation of the state procession, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and splendour of Queen Victoria's coronation day.
