EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1936, showcases the Duke of Cambridge public house on Hackney Road in London's East End. The image captures the corner view of this historic pub, which was demolished in 1938 and replaced with a new building on the same plot. At the time of this photograph, the pub was under the ownership of the Charrington and Company Limited. The Duke of Cambridge, established in the late 19th century, was a beloved local institution for generations of East Londoners. The pub's rich history can be traced back to 1929, as detailed on the back of this print. The trading record from that year, as well as 1941, is featured, providing a glimpse into the pub's past. The 1930s were an era of significant change for the Duke of Cambridge and the surrounding area. The image captures the pub's classic brick facade, adorned with ornate details and the distinctive "Duke of Cambridge" sign. The pub's characterful appearance, with its large windows and inviting entrance, speaks to the warm and welcoming atmosphere that drew in patrons for generations. Today, the old Duke of Cambridge pub is no longer in existence. However, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the history and charm of this once-beloved local watering hole. The image invites us to imagine the stories and memories that were created within its walls and the role it played in the lives of the people of Hackney Road.
