EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning relief depicts a regal figure believed to be the great Pharaoh Ramesses II of the New Kingdom in Egypt, dated around 1279-1213 BC. The relief, carved from granite, was discovered in Memphis, the ancient capital city of Egypt. Ramesses II is shown in profile, with a short, carefully groomed beard, a sign of his royal status. His face is serene and strong, with a slight furrow between his brows, giving an air of wisdom and authority. The false eyes, inlaid with blue feldspar and calcite, add a sense of depth and realism to the portrait. Ramesses II was one of Egypt's most powerful and successful pharaohs, known for his military conquests and architectural achievements. He ruled during a time of great prosperity and cultural flourishing in ancient Egypt, and his image was widely disseminated throughout the kingdom as a symbol of his power and divine status. This relief is now on display at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, where it continues to captivate visitors with its intricate carving and historical significance.
