EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork depicts a female and male Stitchbird Hihi (Notiomystis cincta), a native bird species endemic to New Zealand. Painted by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans for Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," this illustration was published in 1888. The female Stitchbird, with her olive-brown plumage and distinctive white eye stripe, is perched on a mossy branch. Her beak is slightly curved and pointed, and her legs are long and slender. The male Stitchbird, shown on the left, is adorned with a vibrant, iridescent green and blue plumage, with a red eye stripe and a distinctive white patch on his wings. His beak is larger and more robust than the female's. The Stitchbird, also known as the Hihi or Saddleback, is a small, forest-dwelling bird that was once widespread throughout New Zealand. However, due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species, the population declined significantly, and the bird is now considered endangered. Conservation efforts have been implemented to protect and increase their numbers, including predator control and habitat restoration. Keulemans' intricate and detailed painting captures the beauty and uniqueness of this fascinating bird species, providing a glimpse into the natural history of New Zealand's avian fauna. The artwork serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the world's biodiversity and protecting endangered species.
