Authorised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on 28th November 1915 and embarking for Britain on 27th September 1916, its personnel on arrival were absorbed by the 92nd Battalion (48th Highlanders), CEF to provide reinforcements for the Canadian Corps in the field. EDITORS COMMENTS
This humorous postcard from 1916 showcases a comically portrayed German General, complete with a red face and an equally ludicrous steed, declaring his defeat at the approach of the 96th Battalion (Canadian Highlanders). The 96th Battalion, an infantry unit of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), was authorized in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on November 28, 1915, and embarked for Britain on September 27, 1916. Upon arrival, its personnel were absorbed by the 92nd Battalion (48th Highlanders), CEF, to provide reinforcements for the Canadian Corps in the field. The 96th Battalion officially disbanded on October 8, 1916. This postcard, a testament to the patriotic spirit of the time, reflects the Allied confidence and determination during World War I. The image of the defeated German General, with its exaggerated humor, adds a lighthearted touch to the seriousness of the war effort.
