EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the monument dedicated to Billy Bray, a prominent figure in Cornish history. William Trewartha Bray, born in 1794, was not only a skilled tin miner but also an esteemed local preacher for over four decades within the Bible Christian Methodist denomination. This image captures his memorial and grave situated in the churchyard at Baldhu Anglican Church, known as the Church of St Michael the Archangel. Once a thriving place of worship, this historic church eventually fell into disrepair and was later transformed into private residential accommodation. However, its significance remains intact through this photograph by Arthur William Jordan. Billy Bray's legacy lives on through his impactful contributions to both Methodism and Cornwall's cultural heritage. His unwavering dedication to spreading religious teachings made him a beloved figure among locals during his lifetime. Even after passing away at Twelveheads at the age of 73 on May 25th, 1868, his memory continues to be honored with this striking monument. As we gaze upon this image from the early 1900s captured by Jordan's lens, we are reminded of Cornwall's rich religious history and Billy Bray's lasting influence on both faith and community within Truro and beyond.
