Artwork of diabetic retinopathy ophthalmoscope view
Diabetic retinopathy. Artwork of the retina of the eye (ophthalmoscope view) in a diabetic patient. Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to the blood supply of the retina - the light-sensitive membrane inside the back of the eye. The condition occurs as a complication of diabetes. Here, discolouration of the retina fundus (or blind spot, yellow) is seen. The red patches are haemorrhages, caused by blood leaking from blocked capillaries, with resulting reduction in blood flow to some areas of the retina. The yellow spots are fatty exudates, caused by increased permeabil- ity of blood vessels. Retinopathy impairs sight and can lead to blindness

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate artwork of diabetic retinopathy, providing a unique ophthalmoscope view into the retina of a diabetic patient. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that arises from damage to the blood supply in the light-sensitive membrane at the back of the eye. As a complication of diabetes mellitus, this disorder manifests as discolouration in the retina fundus, represented here by an intriguing yellow blind spot. The red patches scattered throughout depict haemorrhages resulting from blood leakage due to blocked capillaries. This leads to reduced blood flow in certain areas of the retina and further complicates vision impairment. Additionally, fatty exudates are illustrated as yellow spots caused by increased permeability in blood vessels. Retinopathy poses significant threats to sight and can ultimately lead to blindness if left untreated. Through this visually striking representation, we gain insight into both its medical implications and artistic beauty simultaneously. Science Photo Library brings forth this remarkable piece that merges art with medicine seamlessly. By capturing such detailed imagery through ophthalmoscopy techniques, they shed light on type 2 diabetes-related complications while emphasizing their commitment to healthcare and scientific exploration.
