Charons shadow cast on Pluto
Solar eclipse on Pluto as viewed from its moon Charon, artwork. Charons shadow can be seen projected onto the centre of Pluto. From within that shaded region the Sun would appear eclipsed. Pluto is the smallest of the nine planets in the solar system, with a diameter of 2300 kilometres. Charons diameter is about half that. This compares to our own Moon, which has a diameter of about 3500 kilometres. Scientists speculate that the surface of Charon is mainly water ice, whereas Pluto is covered in methane ice. But no spacecraft has yet confirmed this

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the intriguing phenomenon of a solar eclipse on Pluto as viewed from its moon, Charon. The print reveals Charon's shadow projected onto the center of Pluto, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Within this shaded region, the Sun appears eclipsed, adding to the mystique and beauty of this celestial event. Pluto, known as the smallest planet in our solar system with a diameter of 2300 kilometers, is dwarfed even further by its moon Charon, which has a diameter about half that size. In comparison to Earth's Moon with a diameter of approximately 3500 kilometers, these dimensions highlight the unique characteristics of these distant bodies. While scientists speculate that Charon's surface mainly consists of water ice and Pluto is covered in methane ice, no spacecraft has yet confirmed these findings. This uncertainty adds an element of intrigue to our understanding of these enigmatic worlds. Through this stunning illustration created by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of the wonders within our own solar system but also how much there is left for us to explore and discover. It serves as a reminder that science and astronomy continue to push boundaries and unravel mysteries beyond what we can imagine.
