Cosmic string lensing, artwork
Cosmic string lensing, artwork. Cosmic strings (red) are theoretical one-dimensional loops thought to have formed when regions of spacetime with different properties contacted each other during the very early stages of the universe. They are thought to be around as thin as a proton, but with an extremely high density. As such they have very high gravitational forces and can act as cylindrical gravitational lenses, producing the double images of galaxies shown here. It may be possible to discover cosmic strings by looking for pairs of identical galaxies

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Cosmic String Lensing" by Lynette Cook takes us on a mesmerizing journey through the mysteries of our universe. The image showcases the theoretical concept of cosmic strings, one-dimensional loops believed to have formed during the early stages of the universe when different regions of spacetime collided. In this illustration, we witness the immense power and gravitational forces exerted by these enigmatic cosmic strings. Colored in striking red, they appear as thin as a proton but possess an extraordinary density that defies comprehension. Acting as cylindrical gravitational lenses, they bend light and create double images of galaxies. The ethereal beauty captured in this artwork invites us to ponder the vastness and complexity of our cosmos. It hints at the possibility that cosmic strings could be detected by observing pairs of identical galaxies affected by their gravitational influence. Lynette Cook's skillful portrayal not only provides a visual feast for astronomy enthusiasts but also serves as a reminder that there is still much we do not know about our universe. Through her artistry, she bridges science and imagination, allowing us to explore concepts such as general relativity and cosmology with awe-inspiring visuals. This thought-provoking print from Science Photo Library encourages us to delve deeper into astrophysics and unravel the secrets hidden within our ever-expanding universe.
