Freshwater leech, SEM

Freshwater leech. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freshwater leech (Hirudo sp.). This parasite has two suckers, one at each end of its body, that it uses to attach itself to the skin of its victim whilst it drinks their blood. The mouth is contained within the head sucker (upper left) while the rear sucker (upper right) is used to hold the leech on the preys skin. Freshwater leeches are found in lakes and marshes, as well as slow-flowing streams. They feed on the blood of fish, amphibians and mammals. Magnification: x25 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a freshwater leech, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The vibrant colors highlight the unique features of this parasitic creature, belonging to the Hirudo species. With two powerful suckers at each end of its body, this leech attaches itself to its victim's skin while indulging in their blood. The upper left sucker houses its mouth, allowing it to feed on various prey such as fish, amphibians, and mammals. Freshwater leeches can be found thriving in lakes, marshes, and slow-flowing streams. Their ability to adapt and survive in different aquatic environments is truly remarkable. This image provides an up-close look at the biological wonders that exist within our natural world. Magnified 25 times when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this SEM photograph allows us to appreciate the complexity of these annelids. As ectoparasites belonging to the hirudinidae family, they play a significant role in their ecosystems by maintaining balance among populations. Nature enthusiasts and biology aficionados will undoubtedly find fascination in this extraordinary glimpse into the microscopic realm of freshwater leeches. It serves as a reminder that even creatures we may overlook have their own place and purpose within our vast wildlife tapestry.
