LM of Kodachrome 64 film emulsion
Light micrograph of the emulsion from Kodachrome 64 colour transparency film. This film works on a subtractive process, a method of colour synthesis whereby two or more superimposed colourants are used to selectively absorb their complementary colours from white light. It has three layers of emulsion (a suspension of light-sensitive silver halide grains in a transparent gel) which respond seperately to blue, green & red light. During the developing process the image recorded by each layer produces clouds of dye of the complimenary colour; yellow, magenta or cyan. Together the three layers can form any colour of the spectrum. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a light micrograph of the emulsion from Kodachrome 64 colour transparency film. The image reveals the inner workings of this remarkable film, which operates on a subtractive process to create stunning colors. Composed of three layers of emulsion suspended in a transparent gel, each layer responds independently to blue, green, and red light. As white light passes through these layers during exposure, they selectively absorb their complementary colors. During development, clouds of dye in yellow, magenta, or cyan are produced by each layer based on the recorded image. The result is an extraordinary palette that can reproduce any color within the spectrum. This technology revolutionized photography by allowing photographers to capture vibrant and lifelike images with unparalleled accuracy. At a magnification level of x200 at 35mm size, this photograph provides an up-close view into the complex structure and delicate details present in every frame captured using Kodachrome 64 film emulsion. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this scientific marvel for all enthusiasts to appreciate its artistic value while also acknowledging its significant contribution to photographic history.
