Oleander flower anthers, SEM

Oleander flower anthers. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the five anthers of the flower of an oleander plant (Nerium sp.). These form part of the male reproductive structures of the plant (stamens). The anthers, which are fused at their tips (top right), produce the plants pollen (not seen). The male sex cells in the pollen grains fertilise the female sex cells (ovules, not seen) held in the ovary. The ovary and its surrounding tissues may then ripen to form a fruit containing seeds. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Oleander flower anthers. In this colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are given a close-up view of the five anthers that make up the stamens, which are vital male reproductive structures in Nerium sp. , commonly known as oleander plants. The fused tips of these anthers can be observed at the top right corner, forming a unique and visually appealing pattern. These anthers play a crucial role in producing pollen, although it is not visible in this image. The male sex cells contained within the pollen grains have the essential task of fertilizing the female sex cells or ovules, which unfortunately cannot be seen here. As pollination occurs successfully, fascinating changes take place within the ovary and its surrounding tissues. They gradually ripen to form fruits containing seeds, ensuring future generations of these remarkable plants. At a magnification level of x20 and printed at 6x7cm size, this SEM photograph allows us to appreciate every minute detail present on these hairy structures. From their vibrant colors to their delicate hairs and fused arrangement, this image truly highlights nature's incredible design found within oleander flowers. Captured by Science Photo Library with expertise and precision, this print serves as both a testament to botanical wonders and a reminder of our planet's awe-inspiring biodiversity.
