Oxytocin hormone crystals, PLM C016 / 7196

Oxytocin. Polarised light micrograph (PLM) of crystals of the female hormone oxytocin. In women this hormone is secreted naturally by the pituitary gland. It is also manufactured synthetically in the laboratory for use as a drug. Oxytocin causes contractions of the uterus during labour, and it also stimulates the flow of milk in women who are breast-feeding. As a drug it may be used to induce childbirth, or to help to expel the placenta. Oxytocin may be given in the form of a nasal spray to help increase milk flow while breast-feeding. Object-size: 1.2 mm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of oxytocin hormone crystals. The polarised light micrograph (PLM) reveals the delicate structure of this essential female hormone, which is naturally secreted by the pituitary gland in women. Oxytocin plays a crucial role during childbirth and breastfeeding, making it a subject of great interest in both medicine and biochemistry. In its natural form, oxytocin triggers contractions of the uterus during labor and stimulates milk flow in breastfeeding women. However, scientists have also synthesized this remarkable hormone in laboratories for use as a drug. Its synthetic version can be administered to induce childbirth or assist with placenta expulsion. The image magnifies these tiny crystals to highlight their significance within our bodies. Measuring just 1.2 mm in size, they represent an extraordinary example of chemical compounds under polarised light microscopy. Moreover, this photograph sheds light on the fascinating field of biochemistry and its exploration into hormones that govern various physiological processes. It serves as a reminder that science continues to unravel nature's secrets through microscopic photos like these. Captured by PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this image not only captures the aesthetic appeal but also sparks curiosity about how such small structures can have profound effects on our bodies' functions without us even realizing it.
