EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating poster advertises a production of Hector Berlioz's "La Damnation de Faust" in Paris around 1910. Created by Georges Dola, the pseudonym of Edmond Vernier, this colour lithograph showcases the artistic brilliance of the era. "La Damnation de Faust" originally subtitled as an "Opera de concert" is a dramatic legend that incorporates music from two prior compositions by Berlioz. The withdrawn Huit scenes de Faust of 1829 and Berlioz's arrangement of the Hungarian Marche de Rakoczy are seamlessly woven together to create this masterpiece. The first performance took place on December 6,1846, at the Opera-Comique in Paris under Berlioz's baton. While initially intended for concert halls, it eventually found its way onto opera stages such as the Opera de Monte-Carlo in February 1893. This poster captures the essence and allure of this iconic work with its striking imagery and bold typography. It serves as both advertisement and publicity for an unforgettable experience awaiting those who attend this production. Hector Berlioz himself, a renowned composer and musician from the Romantic era, crafted this musical gem that continues to captivate audiences to this day. Through his genius composition skills, he brings forth a tale filled with passion, drama, and redemption. As we gaze upon this exquisite print from Bridgeman Images' private collection, we are reminded not only of Berlioz's immense talent but also how art can transcend time and transport us into realms where music becomes our guide through emotions untamed.
