EDITORS COMMENTS
This Flemish tapestry, titled "Hercules supporting the celestial sphere" is a true masterpiece of art. Created between 1525 and 1530, this piece showcases the incredible skill and craftsmanship of either Barend van Orley or Pieter Coecke van Aelst as its model. The tapestry was manufactured by Joris Vezeleer in Brussels before 1535. Measuring an impressive 345x308 cm, this work of art is made from a combination of gold, silver, silk, and wool fabrics. It currently resides in the Palacio Real de la Granja de San Ildefonso in La Granja, Spain. The tapestry depicts Hercules himself holding up the celestial sphere with great strength and determination. This scene symbolizes his role as a hero who supports and protects the heavens above. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring life to every thread woven into this remarkable artwork. Originally part of the collection owned by João III of Portugal and Catherine of Austria, it later became part of Philip II's collection. Today, it can be admired at the Tapestry Museum within the Royal Palace complex. Paul Maeyaert beautifully captures this stunning piece through his photography skills. His image allows us to appreciate not only its grandeur but also its historical significance.
