EDITORS COMMENTS
This Flemish tapestry, part of the series "The Labours of Hercules" depicts the mighty hero engaged in a fierce battle with the fearsome Minotaur. The second tapestry in the collection, its origins can be traced back to Brussels in 1528, where it was expertly crafted by Willem Dermoyen. Measuring an impressive 361 x 417 cm and made from silk and wool fabric, this masterpiece now finds its home within the Royal Palace of Madrid. Originally owned by Philip II, it is currently on display at the Royal Armoury for all to admire. The vibrant colors and intricate details bring this mythological scene to life. Hercules stands tall and powerful as he confronts his monstrous adversary head-on. This depiction showcases not only the artistic skill of the Flemish School but also highlights Hercules' legendary strength and bravery. As a symbol of antiquity and pagan mythology, this tapestry serves as a reminder of Spain's rich cultural heritage. It represents an era when polytheism reigned supreme and mythical figures like Hercules were revered. Paul Maeyaert's photograph captures every nuance of this remarkable piece with precision and clarity. Through his lens, we are transported into a world where gods clash with monsters, leaving us captivated by their timeless struggle for supremacy.
