Created between 1525-1530 by either Barend van Orley or Pieter Coecke van Aelst, this first tapestry in the series "The Spheres" showcases the incredible talent and craftsmanship of its creators. Measuring an impressive 345x308 cm, this textile marvel was manufactured by Joris Vezeleer (Georg Wezeler) in Brussels before 1535. It is made from a combination of gold, silver, silk, and wool fabric that adds richness and depth to the artwork. Displayed at the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso in Spain, this magnificent piece was once part of the collection owned by João III of Portugal and Catherine of Austria before it came into possession of Philip II. Today, it can be admired at the Tapestry Museum as part of National Heritage's inventory. Featuring Hercules himself holding up the celestial sphere against a colorful backdrop reminiscent of ancient pagan mythology, this tapestry transports viewers back to a time when gods and heroes roamed freely. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring life to this mythological scene while showcasing both religious symbolism and artistic excellence.
