EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a distinguished gentleman in hunting attire, hailing from 18th century France. The subject of the image is derived from an exquisite painting by Carle Vanloo, skillfully brought to life through the artistry of E. Lechevallier-Chevignard. Handcolored with meticulous detail and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, this piece is a true testament to the beauty and craftsmanship of historical costumes. Published in Paris in 1867 as part of Georges Duplessis' renowned work "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), this book was a continuation of Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri's earlier series on costumes from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard himself was not only an accomplished artist but also an esteemed book illustrator and interior designer for various public buildings and churches. His expertise led him to be appointed as a professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1874. This particular print captures both the elegance and grandeur associated with hunting during that era. It serves as a visual time capsule transporting us back to a period where such attire symbolized nobility, wealth, and leisurely pursuits amidst nature's splendor. With its rich history depicted through vibrant colors and intricate details meticulously preserved over time, this artwork remains an invaluable treasure within our cultural heritage.
