(20th Century) (after); Private Collection; (add.info.: Teutons and Celts unite in Endeavours to drive the Romans from Gaul. In AD 70 a great Batavian, Claudius Civilis, took advantage of disorder at Rome to lead the Celtic and Teutonic tribesmen, amongst whom were the Frisians, in a struggle for independence. Roman garrisons near the Rhine were driven from their positions, and at Castra Vetera (Xantero) two legions were surrounded. But dissensions arose between the Celts and Teutons, and Civilis, being defeated, made peace on the old conditions. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the historic moment when Teutons and Celts joined forces in a valiant effort to drive the Romans from Gaul. In AD 70, Claudius Civilis, a great Batavian leader, seized the opportunity presented by Rome's internal turmoil to rally Celtic and Teutonic tribesmen against their oppressors.
The Roman garrisons along the Rhine were swiftly overthrown, with two legions at Castra Vetera finding themselves surrounded by the united forces of these fierce warriors. However, as often happens in times of conflict, discord arose between the Celts and Teutons, leading to Civilis' eventual defeat and a return to previous terms of peace.
Despite this setback, the image serves as a powerful reminder of the spirit of independence that drove these ancient peoples to stand together against a common enemy. The intricate details captured in this illustration for Hutchinson's History of Nations offer viewers a glimpse into this tumultuous period in history.
As we gaze upon this scene of chaos and camaraderie on the battlefield, we are reminded of the resilience and determination displayed by those who fought for their freedom. This print is not just an artistic representation but also a testament to the enduring legacy of those who dared to challenge oppressive forces in pursuit of liberty.
