1 chart on 2 sheets. Hand coloured engraving, on modern backing sheets.
This chart shows the results of the first British state-sponsored expedition with a purely scientific purpose. Because the earth's magnetic field is not uniform and, as a result, the mariner's compass points either side of north to a variable degree depending on the ship's position. To make navigation safer, Halley made an extensive series of comparisons between compass readings and determinations of north by astronomical observation. He plotted isogonic lines, joining points of equal magnetic variation.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning engraving from the 18th century, titled "A new and correct sea chart of the whole world showing the variations of the compass as they were found in the year 1700, 1702," is a true testament to the advancements in scientific exploration during that time period. Created by Mount & Page under the guidance of renowned scientist Edmond Halley, this chart represents a pivotal moment in maritime history. Halley's groundbreaking research on magnetic variation and its impact on navigation led to this comprehensive map that revolutionized how sailors traversed the seas. By meticulously plotting isogonic lines to show points of equal magnetic variation, Halley provided mariners with invaluable information to make their journeys safer and more efficient. The intricate hand-colored details on this print bring to life not only the technical expertise involved in creating such a chart but also highlight the beauty of scientific discovery. As we gaze upon this historical artifact now housed at the National Maritime Museum in London, we are reminded of how far we have come in our understanding of Earth's magnetic field and its influence on our daily lives. This engraving serves as a visual reminder of humanity's insatiable curiosity and relentless pursuit of knowledge, making it a timeless piece that continues to inspire awe and wonder centuries after its creation.
